Medical physicists are professionally trained to apply physics concepts and methods in medicine.
At the SRCC at Southlake, medical physicists are responsible for safe and quality delivery of radiation treatment to our patients. Specifically, our medical physicists:
- Commission new simulation and treatment equipment
- Perform machine calibration
- Ensure accuracy of dose calculation software
- Manage quality assurance of safe treatment delivery to our patients
They are also the main driver behind decisions to pursue new technology in radiation therapy. Working with radiation oncologists and therapists, they develop new treatment approaches and implement up-to-date technology to provide advanced treatment options to help our cancer patients. For example, they introduced stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for lung cancer, which effectively directs radiation at a tumour from various directions.
